Research Program Summary January 2014 – March 2020

Microsurgery Research Laboratory

Maria Siemionow, MD, PhD, DSc

From January 2014 to March 2020 the Microsurgery Research Laboratory of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted activities in educational, basic and clinical research areas as well as provided hands-on microsurgery training under 40hrs CME approved Basic and Advanced Microsurgery Courses.

The Microsurgery Research Laboratory has extensively focused on the topics of novel technologies for enhancement of peripheral nerve regeneration, stem cell-based strategies for tolerance induction in Vascular Composite Allotransplantation (VCA) and stem cell-based therapies targeting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the development of new microsurgical training and experimental models.

Dr. Maria Siemionow, fellow researchers and students presented scientific findings in the form of over 90 oral and poster presentations at national meetings and 30 oral and poster presentations at international meetings. Results of the conducted projects have been published in the form of 35 research manuscripts or reports and 14 review articles were published in the high impact scientific journals.

Furthermore, the academic activities of Microsurgery Research Laboratory included the submission of 25 grant applications. Within the last 5 years our laboratory has been awarded six grants funded by the American Heart Association, Uiversity of Illinois at Chicago Chancellor’s Fund Proof of Concept Award Program (UIC POC) and the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM) funded by the US Department of Defense.

In years 2015 the syllabus for the Basic and Advanced Microsurgery Training Courses were designed and approved by the UIC CME Office to grant 40 hours of CME credit.

Since then 35 surgical residents and fellows from the United States, Germany and Brazil have completed both the

Basic and /or Advanced Microsurgery Courses.

Microsurgery Research Laboratory is currently working on projects supported by The Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM)/Department of Defense US funding (Projects CTA-01 and CTA-04) to develop chimeric cells therapies for tolerance induction. In 2016, Biotechnology Sponsor funding was granted for development of novel chimeric cell based therapy for treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and this studus are progressing from pre-clinical feasibility and functional studies towards clinical application.

Abstracts and Presentations

Since January 2014 research studies and results of Microsurgery Research have been presented at 82 national and 30 international scientific and clinical meetings held by acknowledged scientific associations and societies in the area of transplantation, microsurgery, plastic surgery, and regenerative medicine.

Dzięki Waszemu zaangażowaniu i więzom jedności powracamy pogodnymi wspomnieniami do tych niezapomnianych wydarzeń. Chociaż echa Kongresu w Krakowie jeszcze nie przebrzmiały, Federacja ...
